ZeM's research profile consists mainly of two components.
One is made up of four thematic areas, intended in theory to cover the combined interests and research fields represented by all the different universities associated with ZeM:

Alongside a clear thematic orientation, as described in the research emphasis, ZeM has defined three structuring cornerstones that identify ZeM's academic-political orientation: education, new blood and science and practice.
