Presentation “‘World culture’: Sergei Eisenstein & his ‘global village'” (Research Project “Collisions”)
Event in German.
In the middle of Stalinist Russia, which closed its borders, there was a place in Moscow where you could travel around the world in your mind: the apartment of the Russian director, artist and polymath Sergei Eisenstein. This apartment was like an installation: a “montage” of objects, pictures and photos, reflecting the extensive interests and discoveries of the explorer, “encyclopaedist” and innovator. In the juxtaposition of motifs from different cultures in Europe, Asia, America and Africa, the unity of peoples and historical epochs became tangible. This was perceived as a challenge in Stalinist Moscow – at a time when the Soviet Union was isolated from the world, in an atmosphere of xenophobic “anti-cosmopolitanism” and aggressive conservatism in art.
We will pay particular attention to Eisenstein’s stance against nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism as part of the presentation of our research project “Collisions”.
The scientific-artistic research project “Collisions” was dedicated to the question of how Sergei Eisenstein’s intellectual universe and his habitats can be made accessible to researchers and the interested public with the help of new technologies. “Kollisionen” was a cooperation project with the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences and was funded by the StaF program of the European Union’s Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
We cordially invite you to the presentation of the results of the research project and the resulting website and VR experience “Eisenstein’s House”: short lectures, film excerpts and a panel discussion on the main topic of the evening.
We are particularly pleased about the presence of our project partners from Moscow: Naum Kleiman, former director of the Moscow Film Museum and holder of the honorary professorship of the Konrad Wolf Film University, and his daughter, Vera Rumyantseva Kleiman, curator of the Eisenstein Apartment – and about our guest Ulrich Gregor as moderator of the panel.
Panel with the “Collisions” project management: Tatiana Brandrup, Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Prof. Marian Dörk, FH Potsdam as well as Naum Kleiman and Vera Rumyantseva Kleiman
Moderation: Ulrich Gregor (film historian, festival director, film critic, curator)
