Although today’s films can hardly do without effects, digital visual effects are often considered a disturbing factor or mere spectacle. Traditional discourses and prejudices are seldom questioned and visual effects are often seen as merely effects transformed into digital.
For a new approach to this hitherto underrepresented media phenomenon, Katrin von Kap-herr proposes the observation of digital visual effects under a double gesture of simultaneous showing and hiding. This reveals a new reading of visual effects, which clearly stands out from the strategies of its analog predecessors. The study thus closes a gap for a German-speaking readership.
